Located in the state of Madhya Pradesh, Khajuraho is the holiest destination in India which is noted for its erotic temples. It is the only village that houses a huge collection of beautiful temples, divided into three geographical sections-western, eastern and southern. All of these temples were erected between 950 and 1050 A.D. The murals and paintings in the temples illustrate the life and eras of the Chandelas.
WESTERN GROUP
Kandariya Mahadeo:
It is an ancient as well as biggest temple with a height of 31 m high in western group. It is devoted to Lord Shiva, the protector of lives. The temple is also embellished with carvings, representing gods, goddesses and apsaras.
Chaunsat Yogini:
Built in 900 A.D, Chaunsat Yogini is worshipped by thousands of devotees. Here, Goddess Kali, the survivor of needy is worshipped. It is the only temple in this group which is adorned with granite marbles.
Kali temple: Dedicated to Lord Vishnu, it is also called as the Devi Jagdambe temple.
Chitragupta Temple:
It has a worth to visit for those followers who believe in sun-god. This temple was built in eastern direction, faces to the rising sun.
Vishwanath Temple:
Dedicated to Lord Brahma, this temple is very important landmark in Khajuraho. It features a three-headed image of Lord Brahma. To the north, loins enshrine at the entrance for protection and elephants flank on the southern side.
Lakshamana Temple:
Dedicated to Lord Vishnu, this temple has a trinity of Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva with Goddess Lakshmi. It boasts of a shrine preserving a three-headed idol of Vishnu, Narasimha and Varaha.
Matangeshwara Temple:
It is a noteworthy scared place in Khajuraho that is devoted to Lord Shiv.
Eastern Group
Eastern group is having three Hindu temples - the Brahma temple, comprising of four-faced lingam. The Vamana temple, ornately adorned with pictures of ravishing apsaras. The Javari temple is a gateway to God with its opulent carvings and paintings.
Parsavanatha Temple:
One of the largest Jain temples in eastern group, housing the Parsavanath image, was inaugurated in 1860.
Ghantai Temple:
Adorned beautifully, this Jain temple houses a fresco, representing 16 illusions of mother of Mahavira’s.
Adinatha Temple:
Bestowed to the Jain saint, it is a last Jain temple and marvelously embellished with statuettes of yakshis among others.
SOUTHERN GROUP
Southern Group - It is the largest temple of southern group which is devoted to Lord Shiva. Inside it, there are sumptuous images of the apsaras, wonderful sculptures to explore.
Chaturbhuj Temple:
This temple has a deity of Vishnu in the sanctum.
